The Luther College women's tennis team began the spring schedule with two matches at DePauw University located in Greencastle, Ind.
In the first match of the afternoon, #25 Luther faced #11 DePauw and was defeated 8-1. The Luther doubles team of Alana Humpal and Katie Nichols posted the only win, an 8-6 victory at #2.
In singles play, Fran Fairfield at #2 and Brynne Zinnecker at #3 and Cassandra Chalhoub at #6 all dropped hard-fought three set matches.
In the second match, Luther defeated Elmhurst 9-0. The Norse won every match in straight sets except one in singles play and lost just two games in doubles play en route to the victory. This is the second time this season the Norse have defeated Elmhurst 9-0. The first meeting between these two teams was at Wheaton College on Sept. 26.
The weekend split gives the Norse an overall record of 15-3. Luther will return to action March 21-28, when it will travel to Orlando, Florida, and will play five matches during its annual spring trip. The Norse are scheduled to face Kalamazoo, Grinnell, Colby, Calvin and Murray State.
